VOLCANO CHOIR

"Shed skin/ Like a master" It's been four years since the first Volcano Choir album Unmap provided a glimpse into the collaborative mind set between a singer and the band that inspired him. Ideas were minted, written at a distance and realized in the studio; edges sanded back and flaps tucked in, the craftsmanship of the endeavor bearing evidence of the craft itself, and the technology used to assemble it. Unmap strove to find strands of life between the ones and zeroes - a carefully constructed narrative that lead the listener through its darkest passages like a tour guide leading their charges through a cave, with nothing but a slack length of rope and the senses of sound and touch. Just as importantly, it brought these people together, setting an expectation for themselves.

Volcano Choir Comes To Life – Rehearses in Eau Claire for Japan Tour

Volcano Choir – “Still” from Volcano Choir on Vimeo.

Some of the questions raised when we announced the existence of Volcano Choir were “When are they going to tour?” and “How will they re-create this live?” The answers to those are 1) They will tour only in Japan, of course, and 2) With lots of practice. We received two videos of Volcano Choir rehearsal, and I’ll be damned if I don’t have a passport. The evolution of “Still” is particularly great.

Wincek (Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir) is leading the path for his new project, All Tiny Creatures.  You can catch the band’s first song, “An Iris”(Feat. Justin Vernon) over at Stereogum.  They also featured a mixtape with a handful of other tunes off their upcoming debut, Harbors.

Getting ready for LOST with Justin Vernon, Josh Wells and the Jagjaguwar crew

sawyer-lost

There might be some pre-conceived notions about what constitutes water cooler conversation at an indie label, but I have to tell you that it’s basically the same old shit.  There’s enough fantasy baseball and fantasy football to keep my eyes rolling for most of the year, but I am happy to report that the majority of my co-workers love all the same television programming that I do.
