WITHOUT FURTHER ADO: Gordi

Gordi

Sydney’s Gordi (Sophie Payten) mesmerized us all at CMJ last fall. She writes big, spine-tingling pop that still feels as intimate as a walk deep into the woods with a partner. Her songs keep one foot in traditional songwriting and the other in the future. Gordi’s musical instincts began on the ivories at an early age by virtue of her piano teacher mother. Like so many of her musical heroes, she was later drawn to the earthiness of the steel string – a useful piece of armory to have growing up on a farming property in Canowindra in rural New South Wales. But the craft in her songwriting is found partly in the emotional spectrum that her tracks span – from wistful aching to spirited celebration, her lyrical journeys take us places in our memories and imaginations that belie her 22 years. The candor in Gordi’s songs is matched by a vocal tone that is at once fractured and brimming with richness. Combining vintage vocal layering and earthy guitar textures with delicate modern electronic production, Gordi’s sonic palette is one she can call her own.

Ahead of her forthcoming EP for Jagjaguwar, we’re sharing her off-the-cuff cover of fellow Aussie Courtney Barnett’s “Avant Gardener.” Accompanying her voice with just a piano, Gordi gorgeously slows and stretches the song out, giving one a new appreciation for Barnett’s incredible lyrics. Gordi will be in the Northern Hemisphere in May for a performance at Washington’s Sasquatch! Music Festival

WATCH // Black Mountain Delivers A New Classic, “Mothers Of The Sun,” From Upcoming Album ‘IV’

Quoth Stephen McBean: “Sometimes a riff hangs out in the basement for 10 years before it’s ready to hit the streets.

And with that riff’s long-awaited arrival, we have “Mothers of the Sun,” our first real taste of Black Mountain‘s latest masterpiece IV — and oh boy, what a riff. The searing hesher-metal lead guitar that McBean sits atop the ominous, metronomic synth to start off the epic piece is surely one of his best. Across the song’s spiraling head-funk, the milieu of that glorious riff, the punchy R&B piano, and all-knowing cultic vocals of McBean and Amber Webber reach the dark psychedelic heights of — dare we say?? — “Maggot Brain,” when you realized that Funkadelic was super hip to Sabbath.

In a winking display of double think, directors Justin Gradin and Ben Jacques set a song called “Mothers of the Sun” inside a dingy, darkened cave. There are ceremonial daggers, prisoners bound in chains, inter-dimensional travel, and the whole thing goes down as some sort of Pink Floydian take on Plato’s cave allegory. And there’s a four-armed McBean playing that riff, the glorious riff that’s gonna stick in your head the rest of the week like peanut butter to the roof of your mouth.

The band recently announced a tour of Europe and North America. Don’t miss an opportunity to see one of the true powerhouse rock bands of today.

SIGNING ANNOUNCE // Welcome Trevor Sensor To The Jagjaguwar Roster And Watch His New Video

Jagjaguwar is pleased to announce Trevor Sensor’s debut EP, Texas Girls and Jesus Christ, out March 25th. The Illinois-born 22-year-old singer/songwriter’s distinctive burr of a voice sounds aged decades beyond his years, and the rest of Sensor’s music follows suit, with timeless-sounding melodies and a sense of songwriting that exudes maturity while still feeling fresh.

An English major with an affinity for writers ranging from Marcel Proust to Dave Eggers, Sensor crafts lyrical atmospheres stuffed with confessional lines that leave a mark and visual allusions that aren’t easily shaken. Sensor wrote the music featured on Texas Girls and Jesus Christ on a borrowed acoustic guitar that he has yet to return, composing songs that sound deeply felt and from a place of truth and honesty.

If I’m trying to do anything, it’s to be sincere,” Sensor says about his songwriting approach. “A Lot of singer/songwriters today are oriented in irony. It’s cooler to be lackadaisical rather than to try to be compelling.

And Sensor’s music, above all else, is compelling: the proclamatory howls that close out the piano-led “Pacing the Cage,” the dark desolation of “Satan’s Man,” and the dynamic blowout of the EP’s title track grab your attention and refuse to let it go.

Watch the video for the debut single, “Texas Girls and Jesus Christ” below. Director, Ryan Ohm said of the video’s concept, “The film idea grew from the edge of town, dimly lit, local bar that Trevor and I had both spent time at – but separately and in different time zones. We wanted to try and recreate our version of these dintinctly odd atmospheres and the unique folks who inhabit them – the guys and gals who aren’t necessarily high on life, but can be when the night grows long.

ALBUM RELEASE // The Besnard Lakes’ ‘A Coliseum Complex Museum’ Is Out Now

Besnard Lakes focus their lush energy on a sunnier, catchier sound. Jace Lasek’s clean falsetto is more alive when paired with high-flying guitars, and alongside the band’s blanketed, nonlinear arrangements, he sounds like he’s studied the Bee Gees and Brian Wilson… they have remastered their trudging density into a pop jubilee.“- Pitchfork
