THE BESNARD LAKES

The story of The Besnard Lakes begins at Besnard Lake: a spectacular yet secluded water feature in rural Saskatchewan which the Montreal group's husband and wife core, Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, visit each summer for inspiration and escape. This year the couple's campsite was surrounded for a worrying few days by forest flames, a literal ring of fire which informed the devil-may-care spirit of their exuberant fifth album.

The Besnard Lakes’ new album, A Coliseum Complex Museum, will be streaming in full starting next week ahead of its January 22nd release on Jagjaguwar. The band has already previewed album tracks “Golden Lion” and “The Plain Moon” in 2015. Today, they unveil “The Plain Moon” video directed by Joseph Yarmush and debuted via Noisey.

Accompanying the Noisey premiere is an interview with the band’s Olga Goreas who says, “We probably love the supernatural as much as the natural, and we’ve always been fascinated with more esoteric elements, especially with regards to capturing them visually. There are these sigils I created that are flashed in the video. Each one represents a different positive idea. I actually use them for meditation, and the notion is that you visualize them and they can be realized.”

Fifteen years into their career, with a new line up and a renewed sense of ambition, The Besnard Lakes have created a concise record that expands upon the luscious vocal harmonies, dense guitar-work and classic 70s melodicism for which they have gained huge critical acclaim. They are creating a larger narrative about what it means to be a classic rock band with a deep and rich catalogue in the 21st Century.

Starting next month, The Besnard Lakes will tour Canada and Europe. In London, they’ve planned a special performance with a 13-piece band at Islington Assembly Hall on April 5th. Before that, the band will stop in Brooklyn for an in-store at Rough Trade on January 23rd. The show is free with no wristband required and the band will be doing a signing session after. Stay tuned for more U.S. tour news coming soon.

Besnard Lakes focus their lush energy on a sunnier, catchier sound. Jace Lasek’s clean falsetto is more alive when paired with high-flying guitars, and alongside the band’s blanketed, nonlinear arrangements, he sounds like he’s studied the Bee Gees and Brian Wilson… they have remastered their trudging density into a pop jubilee.“- Pitchfork

The Line of Best Fit

A Coliseum Complex Museum, the new album from The Besnard Lakes, is due out January 22nd on Jagjaguwar. The band already shared the stunning lead single, “Golden Lion,” along with an epic live video from Pop Montreal where they performed with a 17-piece band. “Golden Lion” was also released as a 12” EP, accompanied by the fantastic B-side “The Motorway.” Today, The Besnard Lakes are back with another instant classic, “The Plain Moon.” It’s a soaring, shoegazing monster of a track. Look out for the official music video to follow early next year.

Fifteen years into their career, with a new line up and a renewed sense of ambition, The Besnard Lakes have created a concise record that expands upon the luscious vocal harmonies, dense guitar-work and classic 70s melodicism for which they have gained huge critical acclaim.

They’re unafraid to marry textured, questing headphone sonics to the honeyed pleasure of radio hits past: the rapture of My Bloody Valentine entwined with the romance of Fleetwood Mac. Imagine dreamy Beach House riding Led Zeppelin dynamics, with unabashedly androgynous vocal harmonies. The Besnard Lakes are creating a larger narrative about what it means to be a classic rock band with a deep and rich catalogue in the 21st Century.

To celebrate the release of their new album, A Coliseum Complex Museum, The Besnard Lakes will be inviting friends to form a one-off ten-piece band to perform the new album and music spanning their illustrious 15 year career.

The live show has always been one of their strongest assets, bringing their records to life in a way that most musicians cannot. 15 years in, they’ve only gotten better; The Quietus lauding their London show earlier this year as “nothing less than compelling” and Mojo asking the classic question that confounds unrepentant independent rock bands in the Millenium “why aren’t they bigger?” after their Le Guess Who slot in November.

April 5th at London’s Islington Assembly Hall will be special, enigmatic, unforgettable and one time only.

LISTEN // The Besnard Lakes Share Live Video Of “Golden Lion” From Upcoming Release

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 3.53.13 PM

The Besnard Lakes will release their most formidable album to date, A Coliseum Complex Museum, out January 22nd, 2016 on Jagjaguwar. Lead single “Golden Lion” will also be released as a limited 12” EP on November 13th, 2015 and include two new, exclusive tracks listed below.

Fifteen years into their career, and nearly two decades into Jagjaguwar’s existence, with a new line up and a renewed sense of ambition, the band have created a concise record that expands upon the luscious vocal harmonies, dense guitar-work and classic 70s melodicism for which they have gained huge critical acclaim. Now comprising writing partnership Jace Lasek (vocals/guitar) and Olga Goreas (vocals/bass) plus long-term drummer Kevin Laing, the cast has expanded to include both Sheenah Ko (keys/vocals) and Robbie Macarthur (guitar). Previous guitarist Richard White maintains a pivotal studio role for the band though no longer tours.

At Pop Montreal last month, The Besnard Lakes performed as a 17-piece band and you can watch video of the performance below. Coupled with the band’s new press shot, which is a restaging of the canonical Fleetwood Mac photos from the mid 80s, The Besnard Lakes are creating a larger narrative about what it means to be a classic rock band with a deep rich catalogue in the 21st Century.

A limited number of deluxe album pre-orders will include limited edition white colored vinyl and a metal sigil, hand-crafted by Olga Goreas. The sigils have become a major element of the LP art. Says Olga: “I made 11 sigils after my dad passed away almost 4 years ago. Each sigil has a particular meaning and there are 11 of them because he died in November of 2011 and numerologically speaking, 11 represents a rebuilding of sorts. In a way, our last album was about endings and this album is about beginning again.

In November, the band will be performing new songs from the album at exclusive shows around Europe – dates are below and tickets are on sale now.
