WATCH // Briana Marela Shares Video For “Dani,” Announces European Tour Dates

The video for Briana Marela’s “Dani” is a mix between a video and a performance art piece, orchestrated by aerialist Jody Poth, who choreographed a routine specifically for the video. “Dani” is a song about a mutual friend of theirs who was going through depression, Jody states, adding “I knew instantly that I wanted to collaborate with Briana on this piece; I could see how the nature of the aerial silk would create these artificial limits that a body can push through, just as in life.”

Alicia J Rose, director also adds, “Transforming Briana’s idea into striking visuals and creative framing to capture Jody’s incredible performance was an exciting and fun challenge. In editing the piece I aimed for a lyrical intimate cut where the music drives the performance and the viewer almost feels like they are up in the air with the dancer, a perspective we rarely get to see with aerial dance.

Briana Marela has also announced a string of European tour dates in support of her first album with Jagjaguwar, All Around Us.

WATCH // Small Black Share Video For “Boys Life”

Small Black shares a stunning new video for their spectacular lead single, “Boys Life,” from their forthcoming album, Best Blues (out October 16th on Jagjaguwar). Premiered by The FADER, the video was directed by the inimitable Nick Bentgen who has been working with the band since its inception in 2009. Starting with the Despicable Dogs video from the Small Black EP, Bengten and the band have collaborated on three other videos since then.

Small Black lead singer Josh Kolenik says of Bentgen, “He functions almost as a fifth band member, assigning images to the sounds that come out of our heads, populating them with sprawling casts and endless locales, yet never missing the quiet moment. With ‘Boys Life,’ he’s getting at a simple reflection on being young, and the many identities we all try out on our paths to figuring out how we might be. Falling through the city on the way to our lives.

The “Boys Life” video perfectly captures the vibrancy and freshness of Small Black’s music proving that on their third album they are still evolving and embracing the unpredictable. The result is Small Black in their sweet spot: the smoky intersection of considered and vulnerable songwriting and loose, almost nonchalant ambience.

WATCH // Viet Cong Release Video For “Bunker Buster,” Kick Off North American Tour

Since the release of their brilliant self-titled debut LP in January, Viet Cong has been criss-crossing all corners of the world, playing countless sold-out shows to rabid fans across North America and Europe, and garnering piles of enthusiastic acclaim for their tight, angular, and catchy brand of post-punk. This week, the band announces the unveiling of their new video for Bunker Buster before hitting the road for another string of North American dates.

If Viet Cong’s “Bunker Buster elicits the images of a nighttime urban hellscape littered with lost souls, it does so with its dissected, angular rhythms and existential lyrics. Taking these visual cues even further, director Yoonha Park gives the song a grainy, sci-fi treatment, taking influences from the likes of Wong Kar-Wai, Philip K. Dick, and Lars von Trier in his video for the song.

Park has previously worked on acclaimed videos for bands such as Liars, Washed Out, M83, and Beach House, and this collaboration is no exception to his impeccable track record for pairing compelling visuals with powerful music. Images burst with texture and color while New York City is used as a backdrop for isolation and dystopia. Shot on 16mm film, Bunker Buster pays homage to many classics of the science fiction genre, using robotic arms, surgical tubes, and a mannequin overlaid with projections of human faces mouthing the song’s lyrics.

Also beginning this week, Viet Cong embarks on yet another run around North America over the course of September, this time sharing dates with Toronto’s Greys. Following these dates, they will spend 10 days on west coast, and in November the band make an appearance at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest before heading back to Europe for a week of festival shows – including their curator slot at “Sonic City”. They’ll close out the year in December with a two-night run at Lee’s Palace in Toronto, joined by Greys, Mexican Slang, Weaves, and Mimico.

Viet Cong has already been repeatedly hailed as one of the albums of the year and was recently short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, the top musical honor bestowed upon Canadian musicians.
